What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?

Pelvic health physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles attached to your pelvis and sacrum that provide support to your pelvic organs. Any dysfunction in the area can lead to a variety of challenges.

Such conditions include:

  • Perinatal complications, including tears during delivery
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Pelvic pain
  • Low back pain
  • Hip pain

What Happens During an Assessment?

The assessment will be performed in a private, soundproofed room by a physiotherapist who has had pelvic health training. She will ask you about your bladder, bowel, exercise, and dietary habits, as these are pertinent to pelvic health.

With your consent, there will then be an internal hands-on assessment by the therapist, as she needs to assess the strength and tone of your pelvic floor muscles. As well, she will assess your posture, breathing, and related muscles and joints in your hip and low back. Lastly, she will provide treatment to help decrease your pain.

Based on the assessment findings, your therapist will then customize a treatment plan to return you to your ideal quality of life.

What Does Treatment Include?

Your treatment plan will be customized to your situation and goals. It can include some or all of the following:

  • Pelvic floor (and related) muscle training, including a home exercise program
  • Soft tissue therapy to reduce stiffness and normalize tissue tension
  • Joint mobilizations to reduce stiffness and discomfort
  • Bladder, bowel, or fibre diary
  • Modalities/Electrotherapy, including ultrasound, muscle stim, TENS
  • Education and advice regarding anatomy, breathing, and bowel/bladder habits
